Shoes for Orphan Souls® Shoe Drive

ORGANIZATION: Buckner International

CATEGORY: Clothing and Shoes

Shoes for Orphan Souls®, the largest humanitarian aid project of Buckner International, provides new shoes and socks to orphans and vulnerable children in the United States and throughout the world.  Since 1999, more than 2.3 million pairs of new shoes have been distributed to children in 74 countries, including the United States. For many children around the world, shoes are a constant and urgent need. New shoes improve the health of a child and prevent them from contracting preventable diseases. They also provide opportunity for education, since most schools around the world require children to wear shoes. And lastly, new shoes provide hope. Children in most orphanages share everything and do not own a single possession. When you provide a new pair of shoes, it communicates love and helps a child know they are not forgotten.

WHAT THE LOCAL HOST DOES:

Host a Shoe Drive Hosting a shoe drive is a fun, easy way to make a significant difference in the lives of children around the world. Shoe drive hosts engage their local church, business or organization to collect shoes. When a host registers their shoe drive, Buckner provides promotional materials to make their shoe drive a success. After the shoes or socks are collected, all items should be delivered or shipped back to the Buckner Center for Humanitarian Aid in Mesquite, Texas.

WHAT THE ORGANIZATION PARTNER DOES:

The Buckner Center for Humanitarian Aid in Dallas, Texas, packs and ships shoes, socks, medical supplies, and other humanitarian aid to Buckner-affiliated Community Transformation Centers and network partners around the world. These centers work with families and children in need to transform the poorest communities one life at a time.

Love Bank Missions Program

CATEGORY: Clothing and Shoes

ORGANIZATION: Dresses for Orphans

The Love Bank Missions Program is a unique way to encourage the entire church family to have a heart for missions in general, and specifically as it relates to orphan care. Dresses for Orphans is a nonprofit, all-volunteer ministry that has sewn dresses and shirts for over 35,000 orphans in 200+ orphanages in 43 different countries since 2009. For many of the children who have been served, this has been their first new dress or shirt! On-site directors are strongly encouraged to take this opportunity to share with the kids the parallel between receiving a free dress or shirt and the free gift of salvation – an example of what to say is included.

WHAT THE LOCAL HOST DOES:

The entire church family is encouraged to get involved by saving their extra coins and filling their Love Bank during the designated period. The program is designed not only for adults, but also as a learning tool for children. Each girl’s dress is only $5.00 and a boy’s shirt is $3.00, which means filling a bank with coins can provide a new outfit for several children. The banks are provided with instructions for when they are to be returned. The churches will open them, count the money raised, and send the banks and donation funds to Dresses for Orphans.

WHAT THE ORGANIZATION PARTNER DOES:

Dresses for Orphans sends to the church the number of Love Banks requested (free) along with an actual dress and shirt as samples, to see exactly what the money is being raised for. Also provided will be a complete promotional packet for the leader with detailed ideas and instructions for advertising with hand-outs, etc. One of the unique items, especially as it relates to children, is the country sheets which give information about the country and then a story and pictures of one of the orphanages served.
