Sponsorship

You want what’s best for children.

Around the world, thousands of programs use a sponsorship model as a way to connect donors with children and families in need of support. We engage in sponsorship programs because we want what’s best for children – particularly those who are vulnerable.

Sponsorship comes with benefits and risks.

Like any program, sponsorship has the potential for great good and great harm. Sponsorship can be defined as any program, typically funded by outside donors, that supports the holistic growth and development of children, families, and/or communities. Some sponsorship programs connect those donors to specific program participants, while others are broader.

Together, we can do sponsorship better.

Over the last decade, organizations and donors have been thinking critically about how these programs operate. While the research is limited, there is consensus among nonprofits on some areas of concern – child protection, financial integrity, and ethics in storytelling to name a few.

Thankfully, there is also growing recognition of core guidelines for a healthy sponsorship program. With wise planning and careful consideration, we can put the best interests of those we serve as the highest priority.
