Today, it seems like everyone is talking about transitioning away from orphanages and toward family-based care. However, messaging about family care models doesn’t seem to recognize the complexities that vulnerable children and communities face. In this workshop, we’ll address the real challenges and concerns regarding shifting from residential care to family-based care, such as safety of children, government support, lack of community services, cultural barriers, and more. We will consider ways to overcome these challenges and move towards seeing more children in safe and loving families.

For a residential care program to transition to family care, it requires everyone to get on board. Although some people are more unhurried than others! Whether it’s donors, government officials, local staff, or some other stakeholder holding up the process, there must be a path forward to get everyone moving forward together. That’s what this workshop is all about. Join us to connect with similar organizations, work through some of your relational sticking points, and strategically chart a path forward. Wherever you are on the transition journey (or even if you have your own reservations to start that journey!), this is the workshop for you to connect and get equipped.

There are significant challenges in transitioning children aging out of the child welfare system. This workshop will provide an overview of a non-residential case management model for transitioning children to independence that has been implemented and used for over 15 years in multiple countries. This workshop will share the model structure, implementation, and outcomes. Participants will hear from staff on the ground in various countries, as well as from young adults who have transitioned to independence – and will be given access to tools to assist in program development.

All children need healthy families to thrive, and that includes biological children in foster, adoptive, and kinship families. However, their needs are frequently overshadowed by those of their siblings – which can create a different kind of adversity. We can do better. With professional experience as a researcher, clinician, and cross-cultural worker, Dr. Nicole Wilke has much experience in the child welfare space. However, it is her upbringing as a biological child in a family that adopted nine and fostered over 70 children that she describes as her most educational and demanding experience. Bring your questions, queries, and concerns for a time of real-world discussion about what your biological children need to thrive in your foster, kinship, or adoptive family – and walk away with plans, hope, and encouragement.
