Church Ministry Initiative

What is the Pure Religion Project?

A holy, and helpful vision for the Church.

The Pure Religion Project is a focused initiative inspired by the members of the Christian Alliance for Orphans and the broader CAFO community, designed to help churches live out their calling to care for vulnerable children and families while growing closer to Jesus as His disciples.

Simply put, the Project aims to inspire and equip God’s people to live the “pure religion” described in the book of James and invited throughout Scripture. This “pure religion” is both a growing deeper in faith and a living out of that faith wider.

Our goal as the Church is not recruitment or activism first; it is discipleship. Ultimately, to see the people of God deeply celebrating the love of God for us through the work of Jesus (identity – who we are) and then widely demonstrating that love in our work on behalf of those around us (action – what we do). This intricate and never mutually exclusive relationship between identity and action – allowing what we do to flow from who we are – has always been at the core of the heart of CAFO. This is not a new idea or shift in focus. In fact, it’s a doubling down on what has always been true with a laser-focused effort to serve the Church even more effectively moving forward into the future.

A safe place to do hard things.

We know engaging in the work of mission on behalf of vulnerable children and families isn't easy. It can often feel disruptive to the work of discipleship. The Pure Religion Project aims to equip and inspire churches to grow in both holiness and helpfulness.

Hi, I'm Jason Johnson

With 14+ years of local church staff experience, including church planting in the city of Houston, along with our own family’s journey of fostering and adopting, I’ve seen “pure religion” infect and affect the Church in beautifully complex and powerful ways.

We recognize there’s no “one-size-fits-all” in this space; your church has a unique culture, rhythm, set of  values and resources. But there are some things that are true for all of us regardless of size, location, style or any other element that might make us different from one another.

So, no matter where you are on this journey in your church, we want to help by both making available to you macro-level resources that help you formulate a vision and strategy for your church married with the micro-level tools you need to move your plan to action in ways that best fit and serve the unique of your congregation.

Welcome to the Pure Religion Project - a vast community of churches that care about the same things you do.

You’re not alone, and  we’re here to help
