Pure Religion Sunday is more than a day

Pure Religion Sunday is a day, but it was also designed to be so much more.

Each year, churches around the world set aside a Sunday to remember and respond to God’s heart for vulnerable children and families. That day matters. It creates space to teach, celebrate stories of what God has already done, invite people to take a next step and remind the Church that caring for vulnerable children and families is deeply connected to who we are as followers of Jesus.

And we want churches to do that day really well.

That’s why Pure Religion Sunday is always surrounded by a robust suite of resources, guides, sermon tools, videos, prayers and practical ideas to help churches create a meaningful Sunday experience. But the larger opportunity is what happens next.

Pure Religion Sunday is ultimately a tool for sustained engagement over time. It gives churches, organizations and ministry leaders a natural moment to open a conversation that can continue long after that particular Sunday is over.

Because awareness alone has never been the goal. The greater goal is discipleship lived out in action.

Discipleship in action

Pure Religion Sunday is about helping people see that caring for vulnerable children and families is not simply another ministry activity to consider; it’s an invitation to follow Jesus more deeply. To grow in compassion. To practice hospitality. To move toward hard places. To use what God has entrusted to us for the good of others. Or, in the words of James, to reflect the heart of God in “pure and undefiled” ways in the world around us.

That kind of formation rarely happens in a single day.

For a church, it might begin with a sermon and lead to a small conversation. That conversation might lead someone to support a foster family, mentor a young person, serve a biological family, explore foster care or adoption, or become involved with a local organization.

That’s why the Pure Religion Project has developed resources specifically for churches to help them facilitate Pure Religion Sunday well and faithfully steward what comes next. The goal is to help church leaders not only create a meaningful Sunday (or weekend), but also give their people clear pathways to continue learning, growing and taking action.

We’ve also created a toolkit specifically for organizations that work alongside churches in their local communities or around the world. These tools are designed to help organizations use Pure Religion Sunday as an opportunity to engage, equip and support churches rather than simply ask them to promote a program or meet a need.

Ultimately, Pure Religion Sunday can serve as a bridge. For churches, it creates an accessible starting point that can grow into deeper discipleship and ongoing action. For organizations, it creates a natural opportunity to come alongside churches, serve their leaders well and help them turn a single Sunday into something much bigger.

Yes, choose a Sunday (or weekend.) Mark the day. Use the resources. Tell the stories. Help your church see what is happening and why it matters.

But don’t stop there.

A catalyst for formation

Use Pure Religion Sunday to start conversations that continue. Create pathways for people to take meaningful next steps that outlive a singular day or weekend. Build relationships between churches and organizations that can grow over time. Allow a moment of awareness to become an opportunity for deeper formation and faithful action.

The day matters. But what the day can lead to matters even more.

In Scripture, an Ebenezer stone marked a place where God had moved mightily on behalf of His people. It gave them something to look back on and remember: God met us here. Pure Religion Sunday holds the potential to become that kind of marker in the lives of people in your church.

Years from now, someone may look back and say, “That was the Sunday God did something powerful in my heart. That was the day He opened my eyes, changed the direction of my life and invited me into something I never could have imagined.”

Pure Religion Sunday could become a day they remember for years to come. A marker in their story of where God met them, moved them and nothing has been the same since.

That’s why we believe Pure Religion Sunday holds the potential to be a powerful day in the life of your church or organization, but the impact of that day is about more than just that day. It’s a tool God can use to cultivate shifts and growth and movement that result in the testimonies of many being told for years to come:

God met us here, and nothing has been the same since.
